What is GMSL/FAKRA?

Gigabit Multimedia Serial Link (GMSL) is a multigigabit, point-to-point connection targeting the automotive space. GMSL supports multistream over a single cable, up to 15m with a coax cable. GMSL is a high performance protocol combined with a secure FAKRA connector making it best suited for robotic and warehouse applications.

Why GMSL/FAKRA?

The D457 depth camera adds a GMSL serializer and FAKRA connector to the Intel RealSense camera product line. GMSL/FAKRA offers lower power consumption, reduced ESD/EMI noise, lower latency, and longer cable length compared to USB, while providing higher bandwidth compared to Ethernet.

An IMU inside.

The camera integrates an IMU to allow your application to refine its depth awareness in any situation where the camera moves. This enhances environmental awareness for robotics and drones.

Best for Autonomous Mobile Robots

Adding an automotive-grade FAKRA connector, a GMSL high-speed serializer, and an IP65 grade enclosure makes it the best fit for autonomous mobile robots (AMR), automotive infotainment, and driver monitoring. The D457 is supported by the same cross-platform, open-source Intel® RealSense™ SDK 2.0, and requires a separate kernel driver package for the GMSL serializer. The kernel driver is open-source and can be easily integrated into various platforms.

Platforms supporting D457

The following are a few platforms integrated with Intel RealSense Depth Camera D457.

ROBOX500_IO_658

Axiomtek ROBOX500

Based on the 12th Gen Intel® Core™ i7 processor (Alder Lake-P), the Axiomtek ROBOX500 is a robust AMR controller for heavy-duty vehicles. It supports up to eight GMSL camera interfaces for stable, long-distance image transmission, and features extensive I/O options including M12-type LANs, USB ports, CAN, and RS-232/422/485. With a wide operating temperature range from -20°C to +70°C and a power input range of 9-60 VDC, it is designed for challenging environments. The platform includes open-source software demonstrating multi D457 camera operation and object detection tutorials.

ESG610_Revised_Angle1_wh

Connect Tech Anvil platform with NVIDIA® Jetson™ AGX Orin

Equipped to handle up to eight Intel® RealSense™ Depth Camera D457s in one system, the Connect Tech Anvil platform supports the Intel® RealSense™ D457 out of the box, providing readily available drivers and seamless integration for vision deployments. With the GMSL FAKRA interface, the Anvil platform allows for longer cable lengths and secure automotive-style connectors, ideal for autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) and other applications requiring robust connectivity solutions.

Long range with GMSL/FAKRA interface

The D457 is comprised of the same D450 optical module used in the D455 camera with a new Vision Processor D4 Board V5. It has the same long range KPIs as the D455 with the benefits of the secure GMSL/FAKRA connector and IP65 grade.

Multi-D457 Camera Synchronization over GMSL

When multiple D457 cameras are connected to one system, their streams often need to be synchronized. This can be achieved through two methods: using the GMSL link without sync cable wiring or through the 9-pin AUX connector with a 2-wire sync cable, which is typically used on USB Intel RealSense cameras like the D45x, D43x, and D415.

On-chip calibration over MIPI

Intel RealSense SDK 2.0 now provides an on‑chip self‑calibration option for your D457 stereo camera. This allows camera calibration in less than 15 seconds without the need for specialized targets. Hassle free!

Leveraging the power of SDK 2.0

Build the future with the open source Intel® RealSense™ SDK 2.0 and depth tools. Platform independent, the SDK supports all current Intel RealSense depth cameras and includes wrappers for many common platforms and languages.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Intel® RealSense™ Depth Camera D457 features our longest range widest field of view global shutter camera with a GMSL serializer and FAKRA connector.

Based on the D455 camera, the peripheral dimensions are 124 mm (X) × 29 mm (Y) × 36 mm (Z).

There are many benefits to GMSL/FAKRA over USB & Ethernet, including:
- Higher bandwidth of 6Gb vs. 1Gb Ethernet
- Can support long cable length (15m) vs. 3m USB3
- GMSL/ FAKRA has better EMI than USB
- GMSL/FAKRA has lower power and lower latency compared to USB

All the Intel® RealSense™ Depth Camera in the D400 family have an USB interface. The main reasons include:
- USB is natively supported by all the operating systems, making it easy to integrate to most platforms.
- Many low cost platforms do not have GMSL/FAKRA interface.
- The drivers to support GMSL/FAKRA are developed per platform so require more integration effort from the customers.

The D457 is mainly targeted for the autonomous mobile robotic market and other customers that use the GMSL/Fakra in their platforms.

Integration of the D457 into a platform, requires a GMSL/FAKRA de-serializer connecting to the Host platform. Contact the support team for more information

The D457 is supported with the same cross-platform open-source Intel® RealSense™ SDK 2.0, with a separate kernel driver package for the MIPI interface, that is connected to the GMSL serializer. It is tested and verified on leading platforms with GMSL de-serializer and FAKRA connector support.

Yes. D457 is comprised of the same D450 Optical module used in D455 camera with a new Intel® RealSense™ Vision Processor D4 Board V5.

The box product comes in a retail box. It has a peripheral, a GMSL cable, tripod and a get started guide.

Yes. The Intel® RealSense™ Depth Camera D457 comes in 30 pack bulk version with only the peripheral – no cable, tripod or retail box.
